Making Waves with the Wavemakers

Great news! We’re thrilled to announce a major milestone in our Making Waves campaign:

Nature’s Negotiators is excited to celebrate history in the making as the first Tribally-nominated marine sanctuary in U.S. history receives its official designation on Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

NOAA has officially posted the final designation documents for the new Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary!
We applaud Violet Sage Walker, Chairwoman of the Northern Chumash Tribal Council, NOAA, the White House, and a plethora of partners across tribes, nonprofits, and governmental organizations for their nearly 40-year efforts, which finally culminated in the designation of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary!!

Tribal Chairwoman Walker stated that by “integrating traditional practices and knowledge with federal processes, the Sanctuary will protect… a wide variety of wildlife, including many at-risk species, such as snowy plovers, southern sea otters, leatherback sea turtles, black abalone, and blue whales, and ancestral waters of several Tribes from along the Central California Coast.
